I suppose I’m lucky now, that I can feel calm and peaceful at home. There was a time when I didn’t and it made my home a living hell.
It all started because I was stressed out of my brain from work, I would often come home and just collapse into a big ball of tears. As well, as sheer exhaustion, as I’ve been on my feet all day. Feeling stressed, tearful and aching is never a good mixture.
Friday night, while for most people was party night and the working week was over, for me it was just starting all over again and the process of starting work again really stressed me out. To the point where I would be a complete nervous wreck and I could not find peace at home.
I know everyone always says, that once you leave work – that it over and there nothing to worry about anymore. But I would worry and I would worry a lot. A lot more then I care to admit.
I would talk my poor husband ears off on how much this really would stress me out and how it made me feel. He sympathy and understood how I was feeling; his only solution was to have sympathetic ears and to turn the home into a peaceful calming environment.
The problem was, and the reason why – for a while, I could just get up and leave work if it was indeed affecting my mental health – was money. We were in the process of buying a place and we were in desperate need of money. We almost couldn’t get a mortgage as it was tight. So for a time, I was stuck.
Moving on 6 months where we finally got the place, my home was still a living hell as I still could not relax. For both and my husband, the home really became a battleground, all down to my mental health. Eventually, it got to the point where I just said ‘F**k it’ one day, and with the support of both my parents – and husband I just left the workplace.
The point I’m making is, there are times when your home isn’t the sanctuary you always think it is. Often what is affecting you in the outside world – is still affecting you at home. Thus, not only damaging your home life but also your mental health.
I now shudder at the memories of how I was, that girl who would cry all the time and be completely stressed out all the time. If I could talk to that girl, then – I would tell her things does get better.
From learning a steep lesson on how important it is to feel calm and peaceful at home, I now understand that you really do need to shut your front door and to block out the outside world.
So with all that said, here’s how to feel calm and peaceful at home. Where it will help your mental health and make you a happier person.
Have some alone time:
Boot out your husband/other half and have some alone time at home. Tell him/her to go out for an hour and leave you in peace. Of course, I can understand that this is not always possible. But if you can have some alone time, it will do you a world of good. It gives you a chance to breathe and to do what you want to do – whether its housework, baking or even sitting on the sofa stroking your pet.
Download a relaxing/meditations app:
There are hundreds of relaxing/meditation available, so find one that is right for you. I personally use the Rituals app, where it does actually talk you through on how to mediate. Just close the door in the bedroom while everyone is watching TV and put on the app and mediate.
Only have calming music on:
No loud rock music on, but the soft gentle music where it can make you feel peaceful (and sometimes a little sleepy). Have it as background music and something that is played throughout the home. Some people do even recommend white noise, but personally, I’m not a fan of them.
Have a little talking time with the family or spout:
Where it one evening a week where you all meet up in the living room and just talk. I know, easier said than done. Or you don’t have to talk – perhaps play a game or do activities together.
Brighten up the place:
Sometimes adding that little pop of colour can brighten up the place and make the home feel calmer. You don’t need to do a full paint job, just add some pretty flowers or add a new wall art.
Read:
Before going to bed, perhaps spend an hour where you read. Maybe find a book where you can really get into it. The kind of book where your mind is focused on the story and nothing else matters. It a good way to distract the mind, especially before bedtime.
Do an activity /hobby that occupied the mind:
This much like reading is something that will occupy the mind. So if you enjoy knitting or even cleaning, then spend an hour a week doing that. Maybe in time if you feel really comfortable, you can join a support team and go to a weekly meeting.
Write:
If the outside world is stressing you out and needs an outlet, then write in a little journal on how you are feeling. Just pour out your feeling and then put in a safe place where no one can find it. That way, there no need to turn your home into a battleground.
