I have a serious sweet tooth where I’m a dentist worst nightmare! Put me in front of a pix n mix, and I turn into a greedy four years’ old. People always know when I’m feeling sad as I will be sitting in a corner eating a packet of Jelly Babies.
When I went to Hyper Japan a week ago I of course brought some Japanese sweets and chocolates. Let me introduce you to Tofu Cutie, a shop in Brighton that sells imported Japanese sweets. If you can’t get down to Brighton – no worries as you can order sweets goodies online.
Anyway Tofu Cute had a stand at Hyper Japan, and that was how I brought some Japanese sweets and chocolates. I decided instead of going around and picking up loads of different items that I’m not sure on – I would let them choose for me by buying a goody bag.
You have no idea what in the bag when you buy it and every goody bag is different. Which I think makes it more fun.
Here is me trying out Japanese sweets and chocolates, let me give you a full rundown on how I got on.
Pocky Chocolate Flavour
These are not exclusively for Japan as a lot of English shops do sell them. They are biscuit dipped in chocolate. A nice snack to have when you want chocolate – which is always for me.
Pejoy Chocolate Flavour
Another biscuit type like Pocky, but instead it biscuit filled with chocolate inside. It tasted not especially chocolatey and isn’t very filling.
Lotte Kola March Biscuits
These are tasty, crunchy biscuits with a creamy strawberry filling. Cutes biscuits to snack on and the strawberry flavour were a little bit of a surprise as I wasn’t expecting it to be so strawberry tasting. It was like I was having a jug of strawberry juice.
Meiji Yan Yan Fortune Stick
I’m sure some of you have seen the Nutella Dip & Go Pot? Well, these fortune sticks are like that; Crunchy biscuits where you dip it into a pot of chocolate. Something you do need to have in one sitting as the chocolates doesn’t last.
Unnamed Chocolate
I can’t find a translation for this, so I’m calling it the unnamed chocolate. Maybe you can pick up its name. Chocolate filled biscuits that don’t stand out.
Horadekita DIY Candy Kit – Choc Banana
This is a fun DIY kit to decorate & dip mini banana sweets. You have a tray with foam banana where you pour the chocolates and sprinkles on to it. This isn’t very big and isn’t filling, and I found the sprinkles to be messy.
Unnamed Gummy Sweets
Another one where I couldn’t find the translation. These are gummy sweets covered in sugar. Tiny sweets and not much in the packet. These I think had a wine gum taste to them.
Mixed Happy Paw Gummies
Gummy sweets in grapes and orange flavour. Tiny gummy sweets and not much in the packet. Adorable packaging. The nice thing is you can reseal them up again. The flavouring isn’t very strong.
Hello Panda
Biscuits with a creamy milk filling. I thought this tasted like white chocolate biscuits, and the biscuits are tiny and not very filling. The taste didn’t stand out for me.
Overall verdicts
The gummies sweets were tiny, and they weren’t very much in the packet. I felt the overall Japanese sweets & chocolates didn’t satisfy my sweet tooth. They gave me a lot more chocolate biscuits then I was expecting, which is fine but I would prefer at least one pure chocolate bar or cookies.
If you’re curious about Japanese sweets and chocolates, then you should get yourself a Tofu Cute goody bag at next year Hyper Japan.
