As I said in my previous post, we recently went up to Scotland for a few days as Richard has worked up there, and I was left to explore Scotland. I took a train from Glasgow to Edinburgh where I spent the day walking around the city.
Once I got to Edinburgh, as well as taking a bus tour, I visited Edinburgh castle.
As soon as I heard we were going to Scotland, my first thought was to visit Edinburgh castle. And, if you know me, you would know that this shouldn’t surprise you as I fricking love castle. I’m the kind of girl who would never turn down visiting a castle.
So yes, Edinburgh castle was high on my bucket list and the number one place I wanted to visit while in Edinburgh.
As you get into Edinburgh and out of the station, you see the castle looming over the city high on a hilltop. With this being my number one place to visit, I slowly started to make my way over to the castle.
Now I had a little bit of a fall as I was walking to the station where I somehow went smack on to the pavement. I grazed my hand and my leg, while I was ok-ish, I was still hobbling around the place.
So I wasn’t looking forward to making the climb up to the castle. And it should be said that it is steep incline to Edinburgh castle, especially if you want to go to the very top.
I took it slow – especially with my bad leg, there also handrail you use to push yourself up. But it worth walking up the steep incline as the view was amazing!
I’m not sure if my legs were recovering from the steep walk, or my bad fall, but as soon as I got near enough to the top and looked out to the view, my legs just turned to jelly.
The photos don’t really convey the sheer scale of the view from Edinburgh castle. It felt like to me you could see the entire UK from standing at the castle walls. On the day I visited it was misty foggy, but I imagine on a clear, bright day, you could see for miles and miles.
I’m not afraid of height, but looking out and see Edinburgh from below, not only turn my legs into jelly but made me feel a little queasy.
Edinburgh castle is mostly more of a fortress and museum than a traditional castle. It was home to many Scotland monarchies in days gone by. Nowadays it is home to the Scottish crown jewels.
There weren’t many rooms that were opened to the public, but you could see where Mary Queen of Scot gave birth and also her private chambers. Also, there was a large room which houses the Scottish artillery. The exterior of the rooms reminded me of Hampton court. It has Tudor-kind style to it.
Overall Edinburgh castle is still worth the visit – just be prepared for the steep climb. If you re into military history or want to learn more about Scotland past, then do come to visit as there are lots to learn and see.
I’m glad I was able to tick Edinburgh castle off my bucket list.
