What a girl to do when she can’t visit a castle for the day, well she visits a National Trust property, here’s me visiting Basildon House.

I’m sure I said this before, but I do like visiting a nice big old castle, filled with dark passageways and dingy dungeons. We (Richard and I) visited Lewes castle not so long ago and while it was nice to walk around it. The castle was in ruined and there was no secret passageway for me to explore.

But last week we didn’t visit an old castle, we went to a National Trust Property’s, Basildon House. It was my mother in law suggestion and we went along with it.

It a big old house in the middle of an English countryside. As you will see from the photos, we were in the middle of nowhere and it was strangely very peaceful.

I can’t give you the history of the place as I was more looking at the house home décor and imagining how it would have been in Downton Abbey days.

Inside the house, it was very much a mixture of Edwardian décor with a little bit of 1950s style. It an odd mixture from two completely different time period but it works very well and it does give you a sense of what it must have been like in those time periods as everything is original and untouched.

As always when you visit these old places, we explore the ground and stopped off for tea and cake. I mean you can’t go exploring anywhere if you can’t stop off for tea and cake. In fact, Richard and I had the most delicious brownie ever. I’m still dreaming about that brownie even now.

If you want a day in the English countryside and love exploring old houses, Then I do recommend Basildon house. But do be aware that it part of the National Trust, so you would need a membership to enter.

Here are my photos from Basildon House.
