Last week we took a little visit to Hastings. A much need needed mini-break where we saw castle, pebbles, and sea.
Now hands up, how good is all your UK history? What year did the battle of Hastings take place? If you know it, write it down in the comments. You will get gold stars and proved that you actually paid attention in class! If you go it wrong – well shame on you and you should have paid attention in school.
That where we went last week, on what we dabbed as a mini break. A chance to get away and explore more of the English coastline. Richard and I were feeling a little stressed with work lately, and we decided to step away from the computer and unchained ourselves from the desk and just go out and enjoy the cooling autumn air.
Now Hastings is on the south coast of England, very near Brighton. While some people might think it madness to visit the south coast in autumn due to how windy and cold It is. I already had my parents saying to that visiting the south coast is for the hot summer weather where there’s ice cream, punch and Judy, and entertainment. But for us, we hate visiting anywhere that has loads of crowds. It just makes me both anxious and angry at the same time. Often you spend more time in a queue to do anything, rather than actually enjoying your day. So when we can tend to visit the south coast on an off day, where there’s less crowd and more peaceful.
So what did we do while on our little visit to Hastings? We sat on the beach, climbed a big hill, visit the famous Hasting castle and had cocktails. Not all at the same, you do understand. The first day we got there, the weather was actually pleasant and felt more like Spring weather – rather than autumn. This was rather odd for us as we all became prepared for cold weather with thick jumpers, parka jacket and hand and gloves. We looked more like we were about to explore the north pole, rather than visit the English coast. However, that was on the first day.
The next day really did feel like autumn and winter. Strong wind blasted us which made the temperature dropped. The wind was howling pretty strong and there was no escaping it. We couldn’t believe what a contrast it was from the previous day pleasant weather. Made walking anywhere a nightmare and there was a constant ringing in the ear. But we got on with our day and still visited Hasting castle.
Oh, I just written over 100 words on the weather, oh my god! I’m really am turning into my dad. I think he will be so proud if he read this.
Hastings castle sits upon a big hill that overlooks the sea. The castle itself is more of a ruin than an actual castle. What you see in the pictures below, is basically what is left of the castle. Should be a good guess on how old this castle really is.
The surrounding town has lots of lovely little lanes with little shops and quirky coffee shop. After being in the blasting wind all day, we decided to stop off in this one quirky coffee shop where it decorated with books. Instead of wallpapers or using fake books – the whole coffee shop was just filled with books. I never saw anything like this before and it made the coffee shop really cosy.
Hastings overall, you can do it on a day trip to the south coast. But our little visit to Hastings was spread over two days where we took our time and just use it to relax and to chill out. My advice would be to go off-peak as you will have all the time in the world to enjoy everything.
