I just love my French fries. But one thing that have always baffled me – homemade fries. That was until recently, where I taught myself on how to make the perfect homemade fries. Here how you can do it as well.

I’m a chip-aholic. I just simple love eating fries. There was period when I was at uni where I’d be eating fries every day. I feel quite embarrassed to admit that – needless to say it didn’t do wonder for my weight. Fries are what I consider to be convenience food – they’re cheap and cheerful.

So it surprising how I never been able to make the perfect fries at home. Everyone is always telling me how easy it is and it so much healthier then frozen packet fries. But I never been able to tackled good old fashion home-made fries, it always comes out too hard or too oily.

Then early this year I learnt a good tip – boil the potato first. Duh! Why didn’t I ever thought of doing that before? Seriously such an obvious trick – how could I have missed this.

Anyway, now I learnt that simple easy trick, I know now on how to make the perfect homemade fries. And I’m going to show you how.

You will need:

  • 1 or 2 potatoes (depending on how many you are serving)
  • Sunflower oil cooking spray
  • A sharp knife
  • Salt and pepper
  • One large saucepan
  • A baking sheet
  • A flavoring of your choice.

Start with the potatoes on a cutting board. This is entirely up to you but you can peel the skin of the potatoes. A cook once told me it better for you to have the skin on, so I don’t bother peeling.

It also entirely up to you on how thin – or thick you cut the potatoes. It all depends on whether you like thin or thick fries.

After cutting them all up into slices, put them into a large saucepan with boiling water.

Leave the slices in the saucepan boiling water for a good 15-20 minutes.

Or until you can be sure that the slices are soft.

Drain the water and then steam the slices for 5 minutes – just enough to dry out the water.

Put the slices carefully onto the baking tray covered with a baking sheet. Even it out and make sure no slices are over lapping.

Carefully use the cooking spray over the slices – don’t overdo it. Give the baking sheet a good shake.

This is also a good time to use any flavoring or to add a pinch of salt.

Put the baking tray in the oven for 30 minutes.

Half way through, take the baking tray out of the oven and change the baking sheet. As otherwise the slices would be soaked in oil. No need to re-use the cooking spray. Another thing you can do is to pat dry with kitchen paper to help soak up some of the oils.

After 30 minutes take out the baking tray from the oven. The slices should now be fries.

Have a test sample to see how it taste? If it doesn’t take right – put the baking tray back into the oven for a couple more minutes.

If you think it taste perfect – then dish up and serve with ketchup or with your meal.

Bon Appetit

This should take you over an hour to do. It very way to do.
