For most people, Autumn tends to not only make them feel sad but also provoke a SAD (seasonal affection disorder) response. Here is how to beat the gloom and how to stay positive throughout Autumn.

I love Autumn and have been known to be the grinch of summer; I mean, I’m the Goldilocks of the seasons where I don’t like it too hot or cold. So, I’m not a big fan of summer or winter – but I love Spring and Autumn. I’m kind of funny that way.

With my Goldilocks complex, I never suffered from SAD (seasonal affectional disorder), but I have known people who do suffer from this disorder and always dread this time of year.

I thought I would share a few tips and advice on how to stay positive throughout Autumn. So, you can beat the gloom and avoid feeling SAD this year.

Go outside

There is no need to stay indoors and pretend Autumn isn’t here. The best course of action would be to go outside and embrace the season in all its glories. Yes, even if the weather outside is overcast and grey, going out will show you that life is still happening in the world. Grab a hot drink from a coffee shop and sit on a park bench for one afternoon a week.

Try Light Therapy

My mum suffered from SAD. A couple of years ago, she brought a light lamp, and she now swears by it. This is where the light lamp comes in as it projects natural light into the room first thing in the morning. As the day gets darker, it can be a little tricky in getting some natural light in. My mum always says she feels emotionally a lot better after using her light lamp and happier and positive.

Be productive

While it can be easy to bury your head under the cover and hibernate throughout this season, this will not make you happy or keep you feeling positive. The best course of action would be to keep moving and to be productive. Start a new project or perhaps find a new activity that you enjoy doing. Take up Zumba or maybe morning walks in the local park.
